2026 Mercury Retrogrades

How far this register goes

through Oct 25, 2028

Listed cycles run to October 25, 2028. Nothing after that date is on this page yet. Station dates come from a sourced table; shadow windows are listed approximations, flagged wherever they appear.

What Tradition Does With This Period

Optional practices, not instructions. Nothing here times a decision: astrology cannot tell you when to sign, buy, launch or travel, and this page does not try to.

What Tradition Uses It For

Review and Revise

Rereading, editing and reorganising are the traditional use of these weeks. Anything that starts with "re-" fits.

Back Up Your Files

Copying your work somewhere else is good practice in any month. Tradition uses this one to remind you.

Read It Twice

A message before you send it, a booking before you confirm it. A minute each, and useful on any date.

Leave Some Slack

Extra time around travel, meetings and deadlines is comfortable whatever the sky is doing.

Write to Someone

People from earlier in your life are easy to contact, and this is as good a week as any.

Compare Notes

Research you were going to do anyway reads well in a slow stretch.

What Tradition Marks for a Second Read

The Wording of Agreements

Tradition marks contracts for a careful read. That is a prompt to read them, not a reason to delay signing.

Plans Already in Motion

Launching during a retrograde is ordinary. Tradition only suggests leaving room for revisions afterwards.

Purchases You Are Unsure About

Knowing the return policy is worth a minute on any date. Nothing here says wait.

Shared Scope

Where several people carry one plan, tradition suggests saying the scope and the dates out loud.

First Reactions

A first reaction is a draft. That is true all year.

Words Taken at Face Value

Asking what someone meant is cheaper than assuming, in any month.

Traditional Themes by Sign

What the tradition attaches to each sign, and one optional practice

Aries

Fire

The traditional theme is the first response rather than the plan behind it: worth rereading, not worth abandoning.

Taurus

Earth

The traditional theme is revisiting what you already have rather than adding to it.

Gemini

Air Mercury-ruled

Mercury rules Gemini, so tradition names this sign first. That is a symbolic assignment, not a measured effect.

Cancer

Water

The traditional theme is memory and family, and the older conversations that arrive with them.

Leo

Fire

The traditional theme is refinement: work already begun, read again before it is shown.

Virgo

Earth Mercury-ruled

Mercury rules Virgo as well, so tradition names it here too. Symbolic, not measured.

Libra

Air

The traditional theme is agreements and the people inside them, read once more for clarity.

Scorpio

Water

The traditional theme is something already known arriving in plain words.

Sagittarius

Fire

The traditional theme is travel and study, and reading the details a second time.

Capricorn

Earth

The traditional theme is work in progress: reviewed rather than relaunched.

Aquarius

Air

The traditional theme is groups and shared plans, and the value of writing them down.

Pisces

Water

The traditional theme is imagination and rest, kept close to something written.

Other Planets Currently Retrograde

Ve
Venus 42d remaining

Venus retrograde returns about every nineteen months. Traditionally a window for revisiting relationships, values, and spending patterns at your own pace.

Sa
Saturn 68d remaining

Saturn is retrograde about four and a half months of every year, a routine season traditionally read as a review of commitments, structures, and long-term plans.

What Is Mercury Retrograde?

Why the messenger planet appears to move backward.

Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion where Mercury appears to move backward in its orbit as viewed from Earth. Because Mercury orbits the Sun in just 88 days (compared to Earth's 365), it periodically "laps" us - and from our perspective, it briefly appears to slow down, stop, and reverse direction.

In astrology, Mercury governs communication, technology, travel, and contracts. When it appears to reverse, tradition marks these four areas as worth a second read. That is a symbolic association, not a measured effect on any of them:

Communication

Tradition suggests saying the plain version and rereading before sending

Technology

Tradition suggests keeping a backup, which is good practice in any month

Travel

Tradition suggests confirming bookings and leaving slack in the timings

Contracts

Tradition suggests rereading the terms. It is a prompt to read, not to postpone

The "Re-" Rule

Retrograde periods are ideal for anything starting with "re-": review, revise, reconnect, reflect, reorganize, and rest. Rather than fighting the energy, use it as a productive period for looking back before moving forward.

Shadow Periods

The retrograde itself is only part of the tradition. The pre-shadow is the roughly two weeks before the station, while Mercury is crossing the degrees it will later retrograde back through; the post-shadow is the two to three weeks after it stations direct, while it recrosses them. Tradition treats the whole stretch, about eight weeks, as one period.

The shadow dates on this page are listed values rather than computed crossings, which is why every one of them carries an "approx." flag. The station dates are the sourced ones and are not flagged.

Mercury goes retrograde three to four times per year. Some of history's greatest achievements happened during retrograde - it's a time for mindfulness, not fear.

The Ancestral Dimension

In Horospire's Avestan framework, Mercury rules your third ancestral generation - the grandparents. When Mercury retrogrades, communication patterns inherited from that line tend to resurface: the way your grandfather avoided a topic, the half-sentences your grandmother left unfinished, the misunderstandings that never got named. Three weeks of slowed Mercury is often three weeks of the third generation asking to be heard.

Retrograde periods are the same sky for everyone. What differs is which of your seven generations the transit lands on, and that takes your own chart to say. See which generation it touches →
