The Complete Guide

What Is Human Design?

Types, Authority, and Profiles explained - and how to read your own chart.

Human Design is a self-knowledge system combining astrology, the I-Ching, the chakras, and the Kabbalah into one chart that reveals your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile.

A map of how your energy is wired

Human Design is a system of self-knowledge introduced by Ra Uru Hu in 1987. It synthesises four ancient traditions - astrology, the Chinese I-Ching, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life - with the language of genetics and quantum physics. The result is a single diagram called the BodyGraph, calculated from your exact birth date, time, and place.

The BodyGraph

Four answers from one diagram

Your BodyGraph shows nine energy centers, the channels between them, and 64 gates drawn from the I-Ching. The pattern of which centers are defined (consistent) and which are open (receptive) determines four core pieces of information: your Type, your Strategy, your decision-making Authority, and your Profile. Together they describe how you are designed to engage with the world and make aligned choices.

Two layers

Conscious self, inherited self

Like Horospire's own 7-generation ancestral system, a Human Design chart has two layers: a Personality side calculated from the moment of birth (your conscious self) and a Design side from about 88 days before birth (your unconscious, body-based, inherited self).

The 5 Human Design Types

The 7 Authorities

Your Authority is your reliable inner guidance for making decisions - the part of you that knows what is correct, as opposed to the mind, which is built for processing rather than deciding. Where your Type tells you how to engage, your Authority tells you how to decide.

1

Emotional (Solar Plexus)

Wait out your emotional wave - there is no truth in the now. Sleep on big decisions.

2

Sacral

Trust your gut response in the moment - the spontaneous yes or no in your body.

3

Splenic

Trust your quiet, in-the-moment intuition; it speaks once and softly.

4

Ego (Heart)

Decide from what you genuinely want and have the willpower to commit to.

5

Self-Projected (G)

Talk it out loud with someone you trust and listen to what your own voice commits to.

6

Mental / Environmental

You have no inner authority - discuss openly with trusted people; you are a sounding board.

7

Lunar

Let a decision move through a full 28-day lunar cycle before you commit.

The 12 Profiles

Your Profile is a pair of numbers from 1 to 6 - drawn from the lines of your conscious and unconscious Sun - that describes the role you are here to play. The six lines are Investigator (1), Hermit (2), Martyr (3), Opportunist (4), Heretic (5), and Role Model (6).

1/3

Investigator / Martyr

Builds a secure foundation, then learns through trial and error.

1/4

Investigator / Opportunist

Deep research shared through a close, trusted network.

2/4

Hermit / Opportunist

A natural talent that is called out by friends and community.

2/5

Hermit / Heretic

Private gifts that others project practical solutions onto.

3/5

Martyr / Heretic

Learns by doing and is looked to for universal answers.

3/6

Martyr / Role Model

Experiments early, then matures into a guiding example.

4/6

Opportunist / Role Model

Relationship-based influence that ripens into wisdom.

4/1

Opportunist / Investigator

A fixed life path expressed through close relationships.

5/1

Heretic / Investigator

A practical problem-solver grounded in solid study.

5/2

Heretic / Hermit

Called on for solutions while guarding private space.

6/2

Role Model / Hermit

A three-phase life that grows into a natural role model.

6/3

Role Model / Martyr

Learns through experience, then leads by example.

Human Design FAQ

Human Design is a self-knowledge system created by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 that blends astrology, the I-Ching, the chakra system, the Kabbalah, and quantum physics into one chart called the BodyGraph. Calculated from your birth date, time, and place, it reveals your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile so you can make decisions that fit how your energy is actually wired.

The five Types are Manifestor (about 9% of people, here to initiate), Generator (about 37%, here to respond and build mastery), Manifesting Generator (about 33%, a fast, multi-passionate Generator), Projector (about 20%, here to guide and recognise others), and Reflector (about 1%, a rare lunar mirror of their community). Your Type sets your Strategy for living with less resistance.

You find your Type by generating your BodyGraph from your exact birth date, time, and place. Type is determined by which energy centers are defined and how they connect to the Throat. The fastest way is to use a free Human Design chart calculator, which computes your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile in seconds.

Your Authority is your reliable inner decision-making mechanism. There are seven: Emotional (wait out your wave), Sacral (trust gut responses), Splenic (trust quiet intuition), Ego/Heart (decide from willpower), Self-Projected (talk it out), Mental/Environmental (use trusted sounding boards), and Lunar (wait a full lunar cycle). Following your Authority, not your mind, is the heart of the system.

Your Profile is two numbers from 1 to 6 (for example 1/3 or 5/1) drawn from the lines of your conscious and unconscious Sun. The six lines are Investigator, Hermit, Martyr, Opportunist, Heretic, and Role Model. Together they describe the costume or role you are here to play in life.

Human Design is a metaphysical, spiritual framework, not an empirically validated science, even though it borrows the language of genetics and physics. Many people find it a useful map for self-reflection and decision-making. Treat it as a tool for insight rather than a literal scientific claim, and keep what genuinely helps you.
