At the First Quarter the Moon is half-lit and climbing, often the moment a fresh start meets its first real obstacle. This is a phase of decision and push - the cycle asks you to act, adjust, and keep going. Choose your direction and commit to the next step.

Today the Moon is a First Quarter, with about 53% of its face lit and the cycle currently waxing. The Moon passes through one full cycle of phases roughly every 29.5 days, from the dark New Moon, brightening through the crescents and quarters to the Full Moon, then fading back again. The phase you see depends only on the angle between the Sun and the Moon - so the same phase is visible from everywhere on Earth at the same moment, regardless of your time zone.

What is the moon phase today?
Right now the Moon is a First Quarter - 53% illuminated and currently waxing. The Moon is moving through Libra and is about 7.7 days old in its 29.5-day cycle. This page recalculates from live astronomical positions, so it stays current through the day.
What are the 8 moon phases?
The Moon cycles through eight phases over roughly 29.5 days: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent. The four primary phases (New, First Quarter, Full, Last Quarter) mark the quarters of the cycle, with the crescent and gibbous phases in between.
What does waxing vs waning mean?
A waxing Moon is growing brighter, moving from New toward Full as more of its face is lit each night. A waning Moon is shrinking, moving from Full back toward New. In the Northern Hemisphere a waxing Moon is lit on the right side and a waning Moon is lit on the left; the view is mirrored in the Southern Hemisphere.
How is the moon phase calculated?
The phase comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth (the elongation). At 0 degrees the Moon sits with the Sun and we see a New Moon; at 180 degrees it sits opposite and we see a Full Moon. The illuminated fraction is then (1 - cos(elongation)) / 2. Horospire computes this from public-domain Meeus astronomical algorithms.
Does the moon phase affect me?
There is no proven physical effect of the Moon phase on mood, sleep, or behaviour beyond brighter nights near the Full Moon. Astrologically, though, the lunar cycle is a centuries-old rhythm for reflection: New Moons for intentions, Full Moons for release. We offer it as a meaningful framework for self-reflection, not a deterministic prediction.
